Allergic skin misses most cosmetics, hard water and even certain ingredients of the daily menu. What is allergic skin characterized and how to care for it?
The skin can become allergic at any age – the tendency to allergy in the genes can trigger different factors. Some have it since for skin imperfections childhood, however, sometimes the skin is sensitive to allergic skin, but also skin, which has not caused any problems for years.
How to distinguish between allergic and sensitive skin and capillaries?
Allergic skin is often confused with sensitive skin , because the skin’s reactions to what it does not like are almost identical: in both cases it is a burning sensation and even burning, erythema and pruritus, sometimes a rash – urticaria . Construction is also similar: both types are shallowly vascularized, which is revealed in the form of small blood vessels that show through the skin. Finally, it distinguishes them from healthy skin that they have a damaged lipid barrier of the epidermis, often also its stratum corneum. The mechanism of change, however, is different.
|In the case of allergic skin, unpleasant sensations – like pruritus, burning or erythema – cause allergens that penetrate the damaged skin-epidermal barrier, causing an inflammatory reaction and stimulation of nerve endings by the so-called. inflammation mediators. Independent distinction of whether we are dealing with sensitive or allergic skin is not easy at all. Trying to determine this, it is worth observing first of all the time of occurrence of changes.|
In the case of sensitivity, the changes on the skin appear almost immediately after contact with an irritant (which may even be too hard water).
In case of allergic skin, skin changes will occur after a few or even several hours or even days after contact with the allergen.
In the case of vascular skin, skin lesions appear not due to external factors – frost, sun, wind, in situations of transition from the cold temperature to the heated interior – then it becomes red. People with vascular skin have vessels located more shallowly than the owners and owners of other types of skin. Capillary skin is not a disease, erythema arises due to genetic predisposition, its appearance is also influenced by the moment of the cycle – when the production of estrogen is higher, the likelihood of erythema also increases – for this reason women more often than men have a vascular complexion.
The first contact with an allergen triggers an allergic reaction in the body, which, however, is revealed only after repeated contact with the same substance. Therefore, if you use a new cosmetic for the first time and you feel that your skin does not like it, it is probably only sensitive. However, if an unwanted reaction occurs only after the next application of the preparation, you probably have an allergic skin.

A characteristic symptom of atopy are also remote reactions: after applying the cosmetic on the face, urticaria or swelling may appear on the hands, stomach or cleavage. Changes on the allergic skin also rarely disappear on their own: to make them disappear, you usually need antihistamines or lime. It is better not to make a diagnosis on your own: the diagnosis should be made by a dermatologist who will take into account various criteria – the time of development of allergic changes on the skin, their location and size.
Is allergic skin also sensitive?
Allergic (atopic) skin is always sensitive. However, sensitive skin does not have to be allergic. Sensitivity as such is an acquired feature (appears eg due to long-term improper care), while the tendency to allergy is conditioned genetically.
What harms the allergic skin?
This type of skin is very demanding and not very tolerant. Pruritus, burning, or exacerbation of existing changes are caused primarily by allergens that occur in cosmetics. The most common sensitizers are lanolin, propylene glycol, pigments found in colored cosmetics, preservatives and fragrance compositions. But the allergic skin is also harmful to stress, air pollution, staying in air-conditioned rooms, or even using too many cosmetics.
|Allergic skin is often accompanied by a food allergy – it can be suspected if the skin changes appear after eating some product. Then it is necessary to visit an allergist and perform tests that will determine the allergen. Eliminating unfavorable products from the diet will help to improve the condition of the skin.|
